I often find myself in awe of nature’s beauty – the striking colors of the natural world, seemingly independent of time, the inherent symmetry of earth’s natural processes flowing together, conjuring our deepest contemplations. To me, photography is a way to express how I see the world. In my attempt, I try to invoke a sense of place in my photographs, a sense of self insignificance in a vast infinite landscape. It is nature’s complexity that creates a sense of serenity, a sense of experiencing the moment. It is living in the moment, and exploring the unknown of our world that make our lives truly profound.

Patrick Kao grew up in the town of Los Gatos, CA until attending the University of California, Santa Cruz in 2006. After graduating with bachelor degrees in History and Earth Science in 2010, he began exploring the idea of taking photography as a means for capturing nature in unique places.
Through his experiences in travel and exploration, he began to relate his photographic work to what he saw as meaningful and compelling. The result was conveying a simple message expressing the omnipresent beauty of nature. His work inspires to look past the commonly glorified outdoor settings and idealized perceptions of our world, to instead experience the complexity and brilliance of the obscure and unknown.
